Appetizer: What is the weather like today where you live?

No idea.  I’ve been locked in the dungeon all day.  Well, in the warren of offices on the second floor below the library to be exact.  Rumour has it it’s supposed to be quite nice today and this weekend though.  29C.

Soup: On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how career-minded are you?

Depends on what you mean by career-minded.  I’m an absolute, one track mind, overworked, underpaid, workaholic.  There’s no denying that.  Most of my behaviour has less to do with being career-minded (or climbing the corporate ladder) than my inability to say “no” and my refusal to fail.  I’m one of those we only succeeded because of heroic measures people.  I’m supposed to stop doing it.  Switching from corporate to academia was supposed to help my work/life balance.  Uh huh.

Salad: What type of window coverings do you have in your home? Blinds, curtains, shutters, etc.?

Depends (there’s that word again) on the room.  Blackout blind in the bedroom, venetian blinds in the kitchen, wooden shutters (inside) in the basement, curtains in the living room and spare bedroom, etc.

Main Course: Name something that instantly cheers you up.

    Friday Night Blues and Beer

Dessert: How many times do you hit the snooze button on a typical morning?

Me?  Probably 2x.  The hubby is about the same most days.  We have dual alarms but since he typically gets up before me, I “benefit” from 4 snoozes instead of just 2.

    Friday’s Feast: 194

June 20th, 2008 she Posted in Popularity Contests   No Comments »

It’s been a while since I’ve completed one of these.  178 was my last.  I’m trying to get back into the groove of T13 and FF’s since I did really enjoy doing them and visiting others to see what they had to say.  I just need a few more hours in my day.

Appetizer : If you could live on another continent for 1 year, which one would you choose?

I’d return to Asia.  I frequently miss India and would love to return.  Next time will have to be on a visitor’s visa.  My business visa runs out in Jan ’09 but I can’t see the college sending me to India to work anytime soon…

Soup: Which browser do you use to surf the Internet?

Depends on the day and the computer.  At work I tend to use Safari 3.x while at home I use Firefox 3.x

Salad: On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being highest), how much do you know about the history of your country?

5 if I’m lucky.  If you don’t specifically study Canadian history in university, you don’t tend to get a well rounded view of the country or it’s history.  Unless something has changed since I was in school, history was taught on a regional basis.  I learned all about the history of the east coast and quebec (and Europe) but very little about the west or north in school.  My husband’s history courses were limited to events that occurred in southern Ontario.  I’ve learned more about the history of Canada since I’ve been forced to complete Canadian history courses at university.  I might bitch and moan about the courses while I’m taking them, but they did encourage me to try and learn more about my country.

Main Course: Finish this sentence:  Love is…

Dessert: Have you ever been in or near a tornado?

A tornado is how we ended up with a Costco membership.  We used to drive through tornado alley in Ontario on a daily basis when we lived at CFB Borden.  I made the trip down to Newmarket every day by Go bus and Drew frequently picked me up and took me home.  One day we were driving down the highway and a small tornado cut across the highway a few miles ahead of us.  More were touching down in farmer’s fields.  The only building around for miles was a nice big concrete Costco.  We drove into the parking lot, ran into the building, and became members that day.  When the tornados had moved on we got back on the highway and finished the drive home.

BlogBlast For Peace Meme – Advance Preparation

May 30th, 2008 she Posted in Popularity Contests   4 Comments »

“Rules” and backstory – with much stealing from Mimi’s original post.

The Peace Globe project began in the fall of 2006 with a simple post from one blog, Mimi Writes. The post ignited a flame in the blogosphere. The flame became a passion. The passion became a movement. It amazingly traveled from blog to blog to blog across the globe. Bloggers wrote passionate articles on what peace means to them, along with the promise of three Latin words scribbled on a globe – Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) - branded with the integrity of their names or blog names. It was positively inspiring to watch. And it began to happen all over the world – from Singapore to China to Afghanistan to Brooklyn.

    It was simple. And powerful.

In less than two weeks bloggers from all across the globe will blog for peace. We will speak with one voice. One subject. One day.

Won’t you join us on June 4, 2008?

How To Get Your Peace Globe In 4 easy steps!

    1. Access the link above.

    2. Choose one of the four Peace Globe designs. Right CLICK and SAVE in JPG format.

    3. Sign the globe using Paint, Photoshop or a similar graphics tool. Decorate the globe anyway you wish. You can even include the name of your blog. Click here for hundreds of inspiring examples from previous BlogBlasts.

    4. Return the peace globe to me via email ~ mimiwrites2005 at yahoo.com – Let me know your blog’s name and url by leaving a comment here and signing the Mr. Linky. Your submission will be numbered and dated in the official gallery . Your globe and post will be listed on the Official BlogBlast For Peace website and The Peace Globe Posts page.

    Here’s the most important part.
    5. On June 4, 2008 DISPLAY YOUR GLOBE IN A POST. Title your post “Dona Nobis Pacem”. This is important. The goal is for all blog post titles to say the same thing on the same day. Write about peace that day or simply fly your globe. Click here for examples of peace globe posts from previous BlogBlasts.

    Friday’s Feast: 178

January 31st, 2008 she Posted in Popularity Contests   10 Comments »

Feast Number One Hundred & Seventy Eight

I have been “out of the game” a while. My last feast was 143. Bad me!

Appetizer: What is your favourite kind of cereal?

    • Porridge – the way dad used to make it on a cold winter’s morning.

Soup: When was the last time you purchased something for your home, what was it, and in which room did it go?

    • Good thing this wasn’t a scrapbooking related question ;) The last “for the home” purchase was a combination racelette and fondue pot/baking stone appliance that is now residing in the kitchen.

Salad: What is the funniest commercial you’ve ever seen?

    • I haven’t seen it since I was a child but I used to love the “Hack Attack” commercials. I think Benelyn put them out in the 80′s. Aside from that, I’m very fond of the “Herding Cats” commercial.

Main Course: Make up a name for a company by using a spice and an animal (example: Cinnamon Monkey).

    • Coriander Coyote

Dessert: Fill in the blank: I haven’t ______ since ______.

    • I haven’t visited relatives back home since I was 16.

    1. Which open-all-night establishment has been a lifesaver for you? When we lived in New Brunswick, it was Sobey’s. When we moved to Winnipeg, it was Perkins. Now that I’m old and in Edmonton I sleep at night.
    2. What open-all-night establishment is closest to where you live? Wal-mart
    3. What nonexistent open-all-night establishment could you really use in your life? Any bookstore.
    4. Which open-all-night establishment in your town is least likely ever to see your patronage in the wee hours of the morning? Wal-mart
    5. Have you ever purchased anything advertised on television late, late at night? Nope.

h/t to Caylynn’s Contemplations for the FF graphic. I shamelessly swiped it from her site.

    Thursday Thirteen: Deadlines

July 26th, 2007 she Posted in Popularity Contests   5 Comments »

Welcome to the 33rd edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen. The school year is quickly approaching and with it all the summer project deadlines.

Thirteen deadlines I have to meet…
    Â Â Â

      Â Â

    1. I need to finish formatting my help files so I can load them into WebCT by the end of the day (EOD) today.
    2. Custom tool icons need to be completed and uploaded into WebCT by EOD today.
    3. I need to gather up all of the resource documentation my co-workers developed for instructors and students and upload it into WebCT by EOD today.
    4. My course site templates have to be finished by 8:00 am Friday, July 27 (*gulp* tomorrow).
    5. Which is necessary because we’re replicating the templates and building 7 separate course sites with a shared look and feel. That, of course, happens at 8:00 am on Friday.
    6. Testing on the replicated course sites has to be completed by EOD Friday, July 27th so I have sufficient time to work on the customer materials for each individual course.
    7. I have to track down a librarian to review the individual course annotated bibliographies with me. I’ll need to know which of the books and resources requested by the course development SME’s and instructors are available and which are on back-order or won’t be ordered. This information has to go into the individual course sites.
    8. Course specific assignments and assessments (where available) need to be added into the individual course sites. Oh, and I can’t forget the individual course outlines need to be loaded and course schedules have to be coded.
    9. And those 7 individual course sites? They need need to be finished by Friday, August 10.
    10. Instructors have until Friday, August 17th to review their courses and request changes and modifications.
    11. While Instructors are reviewing their courses, I’ll be building my Second Life avatar and learning how to move around in the system. I figure if the boys can spend weeks playing with it as I’m building course sites, then I can have a week to help with the *ahem* research process. Or so it goes in my grand plan / fantasy life.
    12. Courses (if necessary) are revised. All revisions need to be completed by Friday, August 24 because school starts on August 27.
    13. Once this batch of sites are up, the real work begins – all those course sites, and a dozen or so other courses, need to be redeveloped for complete online delivery.

    Thursday Thirteen: Happy Birthday Drew

July 19th, 2007 she Posted in Popularity Contests   8 Comments »

Welcome to the 32nd edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen. Today is the hubby’s birthday so this week’s list is all about him…

    Thirteen Things about the hubby.
    Â Â Â

    1. He’s the oldest of 3 boys – and in big brother fashion was the reason why his younger brothers had some bumps, bruises and broken bones as kids.
    2. Most of his wardrobe is navy blue. Pants…shirts…shoes. This is a big switch from a decade ago when all he owned was black clothes.
    3. He was raised in Southern Ontario, but we try not to hold that against him.
    4. Minus the grey hairs on his head, he looks exactly the same now as he did a decade ago.
    5. He prefers dogs to cats, but pretends to like Thanatos (oldest cat) to keep me happy.
    6. He’s an avionics technician (glorified electrician) in the Canadian military.
    7. He spent 3 years as an infanteer in the Canadian Army before remustering to the Air Force.
    8. He’s been known to exaggerate when telling a story.
    9. He’s got the day off today, so he’s helping our neighbour (the contractor) lay a floor and put up walls…
    10. He doesn’t snore, but he does eat (well, he makes chewing noises) in his sleep. I think the mouthguard the dentist gave him is the only reason he still has teeth.
    11. We joke that he’s cold blooded. He’s always cold and loves the heat. He can wander around dressed in a black t-shirt, leather jacket, jeans, and boots at 30C and complain of being cold…
    12. He once raised a turkey named Gobble that he insisted become Thanksgiving dinner.
    13. He’s exactly 1 month and 1 day older than I am.

    Rockin’ Girl Blogger

July 15th, 2007 she Posted in Popularity Contests   7 Comments »

Joy, over at A Spot of T, decided to award me with the Rockin’ Girl Blogger award on the day I shamlessly blogged about dropping my cell phone in the toilet. Psychologists will be debating for years about who’s psychosis this indicates more about.

    rokingirlbloggger.jpg awesomeguyblogger.jpg

Rockin’ Girl Blogger AND the Awesome Guy Blogger were started by a lady by the name of Roberta Ferguson. Rockin’ Girl Blogger came first and then she came out with the Awesome Guy Blogger.

The problem is I don’t think there’s a single blogger left that I read who *hasn’t* received this award. Ergo, I’m just going to award it to whomever I feel like – whether or not they’ve already received one in the past. It goes without saying that I think Joy deserves one.

    • The crew at Dust My Broom deserve both a Rocking Girl Blogger (for Lisa) and a bunch of Awesome Guy Bloggers.
    • Cammi of Written Inc. fame tops my individual Awesome Guy Blogger list for his thought provoking posts, “Caption This” contests, and for always allowing me to post days late in his comments.
    • Sirdar of Sirdar Inc. has already received the Awesome Guy Blogger award from Joy, but I’m reissuing a commemortative issue to him for making me feel like less of a freakish clutz. I may have broken a foot when I get up off of a couch, but at least my leg wasn’t hairy *grin*Sidebar your Honour? What’s with all these Inc.’s in male blogger’s blog titles? Is that a sign that the content is going to be great? The secret to success? Do we women need to follow this trend?
    • Laughing Muse at Title Deleted for Security Reasons gets a Rocking’ Girl Blogger award.. She makes me laugh, she makes me cry, she gives awesome advice to the unemployed and generally puts up with my crankiness. Oh, and she’s not afraid to go on a short unexplained hiatus. I like that it a blogger – possibly because I’ve been known to do it before? – keeps me on my toes.
    • Haley-O at The Cheaty Monkey deserves a crayon bucket full of Rocking Girl Blogger awards. She makes me laugh, she’s a mommy blogger I’m perfectly happy to read, and she’s worth her (considerably expanding as the pregnancy reaches it’s end) weight in gold!
    • Susan Helen of West of Mars and Erica of Writing Aspirations (please let it be spelt with a “c” and not a “k”) earned their Rockin’ Girl Blogger awards through blood (blisters on typing fingers), sweat (does this plot element fit with the rest of the book) and tears (joy and pain, I’m sure). Both are extremely talented writers in their own right, but I smooshed them together so I’d have room to add
    • Rhian of From My Brain to Yours also gets to raise high the female version of the award. I did debate long and hard on this one because I’m not sure you can top an Uber-Dork award
    • Oh, who am I kidding, I’ll never keep the list it down to 5 female bloggers – Christine d’Abo deserves one too! Skip the fact that we attended the same university (not at the same time) and worked in the same fields (before I jumped ship), she’s always a refreshing reminder of home. I love the mountains, but Christine always reminds me that sometimes you gotta play in the water.
    • Uisce at Whiskey Talking gets an Awesome Guy Blogger award. If I have to explain it…
