Thursday Thirteen – Karaoke

Welcome to the 24th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.

I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m a Karaoke junkie and figured now is as good as any time to explain why.

On a trip to Manila I headed up to Antipolo with a group of friends – Eula, MJ, Chas, Bon and Val – for an afternoon of videoke, food, beer and fun. One thing I’ve learned from my many trips to Manila is that a lot of Filipino’s love to sing. Their joy in song is infectious and before long (although with quite a bit of prodding) I joined in.

When I returned to Canada, I started joining in when my friends were singing. Since I’d only be home for a few weeks before flying back out to Manila, each trip home would always include a trip to the bar and at least one rendition of my soon to be named traveling songs.

What I hadn’t realized before Manila was what a social event heading out to Karaoke can be. As many of my work friends have also run away from the evil empire (most long before I finally quit), Friday nights at Karaoke is often the only time we manage to get together as a group. Sure, about once every few months we gather for dinner out at a restaurant, but Karaoke is always fun because you never know who is going to show up or what they’ll be singing. Sometimes, there’s only a small handful of us, 4 or 5 at the most. Other nights, over 20 people might show up to share stories and sing.

Now, I’m the one dragging newcomers out to Karaoke. Mom and the hubby have even trotted up to the mike to belt out a song or two.

  1. I don’t do karaoke, but you’ve got some great tunes listed there. CCR is a real favorite of mine.

My TT’s up too, but somehow isn’t showing up on the list yet.

  2. Great list! My favorite karaoke songs are similar, though I usually include Petula Clark’s “Downtown,” if it’s available. It sits nicely in my range.

  3. Thursday Thirteen: Pretzel…

    Happy Pretzel Day!

    Soft Pretzel
    Hot Buttered Pretzel
    Cinnamon-Raisin Soft Pretzel
    Out of the Ballpark! Pretzel
    Mustard Garlic Pretzel
    Asiago and Cheddar Soft Pretzels
    Easy Soft Pretzels
    Crispy Pretzel Bars
    Chocolate Pretzels
    Vanilla Covered …

  4. We do karaoke as a family. The boys love it and hog the mike, then they fight with one another as to who gets it. Two mikes, three kids. Major sigh. It’s a blast and afterwards we all go out to eat (no dishes for me! Yeah!)

Nice list. Wish I had a voice that could do justice to any of these songs. ;-) Happy TT Day and thanks for stopping by.

  5. I don’t dare to do karaoke, but I like to sing along with songs (when I’m alone! *lol*). Great songs on your list!

    Thanks for visiting my TT!

  6. I’ve never done karaoke, or even seen it done, but I recognise a few of those songs. Proud Mary brings back memories for me.

  7. I’ve always wanted to sing a Patsy Cline song at Karaoke, but I chicken out! The one time I was really going to do it, a woman got up before me and sang “I Fall to Pieces” and sounded FABULOUS! I was going to sing “Crazy” and just couldn’t bring myself to follow her.

Piano bars are fun for singing along, but without the pressure of singing alone! It’s still amazing that a hundred adults at a piano bar can sing American Pie word for word!

  8. I’ve only ever done the home version of karaoke, and unless I get very very drunk, that is the way it is going to stay :)

    Happy T13

  9. oh yeah – some great songs there. i’ve been banned from singing karaoke in 36 states.

  10. HA! I’d clear the room if I sang, but some of those songs would make me hum :-) ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ is one I haven’t heard in ages and just love!

Some of the best part of visiting another place is to fall in with their ways of life and truly enjoy yourself.

  11. I’ve only done karaoke one time. I’m to big of a wuss to get up in front of people and sing.

  12. Whoa. some of those are hard to sing!

I’m too wussy to karaoke (or too aware of hurting the ears of people I care about; I’m tone deaf), but I sure admire you guys who aren’t such wusses! I think going to karaoke is fun, actually — so long as I can sit on the sidelines and cheer.

  13. I’d either need to be very drunk, or in a far-away country (like Manila?!) to humiliate myself, much to an audience’s horror, I’m sure. Sadly, I can’t sing my way out of a paper box. Too bad, cause Karaoke seems like such a blast!!

I like your new banner, btw!

  14. Man, I LOVE karaoke–great list! I like doing duets, too–e.g., “I got you, babe.” haha

  15. social thing or not, but you will never catch me doing karaoke

  16. You make this sound like fun! My singing is so bad! Some good songs you are singing.

    HAve a great day!

  17. I tried Karaoke when I lived in Japan…the only songs I could sing on pitch with were CCR songs LOL!

    I LOVE your blog design!!!

  18. You couldnt get me drunk enough to do that but more power to you:)

  19. Karaoke is soemthing I haven’t done in years. If I tried it now, “Crazy” would be very appropriate.

  20. Wow, you rock! I have yet to sing in public like that.

BTW, you have the most correct answers of anyone who guessed on my blog…congrats! I’ll try to post the answers tomorrow.

  21. I did Karaoke once with my mother and I am still suffering from the humiliation of it, she didn’t know the tune and blamed me….But I would like to go out with my friends sometime and try it.

  22. Hee hee, sounds like so much fun! I can sing, but I’m shy about doing so in front of an audience. And you’ve sung some great songs Karaoke! :)

Happy TT, and thanks for visiting my blog!

  23. Fun list of songs. :) All the non-country songs can be great karaoke songs. :)

  24. I don’t have the guts for Karoke. I would probably make the same choices if I did. I love Daniel.

Great list, happy TT and thanks for dropping by mine.

  25. I’ve got an ok voice, but I’ve never done Karaoke. It does sound like fun though. Maybe I’ll have to give it a shot. You’ve got some great tunes listed. Great TT topic. Thanks for visiting my TT.

  26. I love to sing but I am a terrible singer, so I do my very own karaoke while driving my car, lol. CCR, Elton John and Eagles bring back great memories.
    Happy thirteening!

  27. Great list! I’ve never done karaoke. Have you ever seen “My Best Friend’s Wedding” where Cameron Diaz sings and sounds terrible but still ends up looking cute. Well, I would be terrible minus the cute factor. Not going to happen!!

  28. I’ve never done karaoke, but it sounds like fun. I only knew three songs on your list.

    Thanks for visiting my TT.

  29. Some of those songs are pretty good, but you could never get me to do Karaoke. Never! LOL
Happy TT and thanks for visiting my list. :-)

  30. LOL Yup I’ve heard all those songs at KAreoke.
Been banned from ever singning again LOL
My friends ply me with drinks to keep me in my seat hehe

    Nice list.

    Aline

  31. ei! karaoke is really fun! and yes it is infectious!!!!hahahaha were going to chinatown again this saturday and give our chinoy friends some serenading ahahaha.

  32. They would have to evacuate the bar if I got up there to sing!

Thanks for visiting and sorry about the therapy. Maybe I could join you and we could get a 2 for 1 deal!

  33. I’m not brave enough to sing in public! But I LOVE all those songs! Great list!

  34. Great list of songs. I haven’t done karaoke in years!

    Elena

  35. There is a karaoke singer lurking within me, and one of these days, I’ll drink enough alcohol to turn her loose.

  36. It takes a brave person to do karaoke! I don’t think I’d have the guts (or the talent).

  37. Lots of classics, very nice.
I hope you did them all justice.

  38. I love Karaoke but I completly can’t sing. My kids usually cover their ears and go running. But it is so much fun! I love to sing I’m Like A Bird…I can hit those notes. :)

  39. Hey I just noticed your NB Blogroll…I’m from Fredericton!

  40. What a great list! I see a few of my faves on there :D

  41. I tried karaoke one time, and loved it, but there’s no place in our small town that offers a regular karaoke night. I have to admit….I need practice!
Thanks for sharing your list of songs!

  42. one of the things I will buy on my trip to manila is a Magic Sing! I believe it is a good tool for my kids to re-learn Tagalog thru songs.

thanks for stopping by my TT.

  43. I have Philipino friends here in Canada that have Magic Sing. They love it.

I have never participated in karaoke personally, but lots of people really enjoy it. Even those who can clear the room when they start belting it out. My preference is to sit in a group of drunks and we can all sing to the songs we know. I guess there is a degree of anonomity, or maybe it is camaraderie, I don’t know. The social event itself is what does it for me.

  44. Thanks for the welcome to TT! I love to sing, but have never really sang at any karaoke. I’m too shy. ^__^;; I always sing in my car though. Singing that “Bitch” song is fun. :D

  45. Aw, my brother is one for singing The Dance as well. Course, he needs several rounds of Corona and the promise of some good lovin’ by one of the ladies (or so) but he does have his price. Sad thing is, he sings SO well and never used his talent. Couldn’t even bribe him to bust a note or two for my church. Sigh.
    Blessings,
    ~Toni~

  46. Oops, forgot to mention that I was CRACKING UP that you were on Romper Room and that stinkin’ “teacher” didn’t even say your name. Talk about pickin’ her teacher’s pets, eh? Magic mirror. I bet the glass was missing because some child went early postal on her. Like, if our names weren’t Bobby and Susan and Mary and Johnnie, Oh and I see Marsha and Cindy and Peter and Bobby and Greg……….Just what about us flippin’ Jan’s of the world?
    Blessings,
    ~Toni~
(who needs to go call her therapist and sponsor, all thanks to Romper Room)

  47. Oh boy. Never done karaoke, but I feel like I’m missing out now. :)

I think I’d have to do a Journey song in there and maybe a Shania one, too. :)

  48. I wish I could sing, but everyone would run screaming from the room if I tried. LOL!

  49. Great List! I love all of those songs! Now I wanna go play karaoke.

  50. oh, i’m not into karaoke…. nopenopenopen

  51. I must be the only person on the planet who’s never sung karaoke!

  52. Wow! Look at you! You know this means you’re a perfect candidate for American Idol, right? ;)

  53. What a fun list! Thank you for visiting me. :)

  54. You sang all of them? Wow! Nice songs, too. I don’t think I ever sand karaoke before. Karen, that makes two of us ;)

  55. I have to find somewhere local that does Karaoke now that there is no smoking in our state. I couldn’t go before I reacted to the smoke with headaches. It sounds like so much fun, not that I can sing, but I can listen.
