Upcoming Shindigs

After an amazing Can’t Stop the Serenity event on June 27th, I hope everyone will understand that we’re taking a month off. We’re working on determining the donation totals and paying all the bills (always very important). Thank you so much to everyone for all their support.

Keep an eye on this site later in the summer . I’m sure we’ll have something planned.

Can’t Stop the Serenity – Edmonton 2010

Welcome to the home of the Edmonton 2010 Can’t Stop the Serenity (CSTS) event. CSTS is being planned an organized by the Alberta Browncoats Society, a registered non-profit organization in the province of Alberta, Canada.

What is Can’t Stop the Serenity?
Can’t Stop The Serenity is a global series of screenings of the film Serenity, held to raise money and awareness for Equality Now, an international women’s rights advocacy group. Can’t Stop The Serenity events are held on (or around) June 23, which is writer / director Joss Whedon’s birthday, through the Serenity Release Anniversary, September 30.

Why Edmonton?
A better question is “why not Edmonton?” As the home of Captain Tightpants himself, or fearless leader Captain Mal Reynolds for those of you who may still need to catch up on viewing your Firefly and Serenity DVDs, Edmonton should be celebrating Can’t Stop the Serenity annually. In fact, thanks to some amazingly dedicated Browncoats, Edmonton once was a host city for the event. However, that hasn’t been the case in recent years. In 2010 we plan on bringing back the event with a bang – thanks largely in part to a dedicated crew of volunteers.

Update: CSTS Edmonton 2010

Can’t Stop the Serenity took off without a hitch (ok, maybe a few small minor ones) in Edmonton on June 27, 2010. Our small crowd of guests were bubbly and excited – nearly as excited as our poor planning committee. I think they might just have been going round the bend.

We are pleased to announce our CSTS 2010 donation totals (in Canadian $$ of course): $2624.75 will be going to Equality Now, $917.91 will be going to the Edmonton Women’s Emergency Centre, & $231.25 will be donated to Kids Need to Read. Grand total fund’s raised for the charities last weekend was $3773.91 (assuming my math is correct). Way to go everyone!

We are small but we are mighty

Thanks to everyone who came out to Happy Harbor Comics Vol. 1 (12226 – Jasper Ave, Edmonton) on Friday June 4, 2010. We met new Browncoats and renewed old aquaintences. Those who chose (ok, those who didn’t fall for the bullying of our overly excited founder, Sheelagh) declared themselves Browncoats for our submission to the Browncoats: Redemption “We are Browncoats” videos.

We spent the evening watching the documentary Done the Impossible! Some had never seen it before. Others got new enjoyment from the film as they encountered familiar faces of Browncoats they’d met at San Diego Comic Con and other events over the years. We laughed. We cried. We sipped wobbly pops.

The event was free but we collected donations for the Edmonton Food Bank during the event which were dropped off at the warehouse on Monday June 7.

Please join us at Happy Harbor Comics Vol. 1 (12226 – Jasper Ave, Edmonton) for our screening of Dr. Horrible at 6:30pm on Saturday, June 19th. Again, admission will be free and we’ll be collecting food and money on behalf of the Edmonton Food Bank.

Pin your hopes on this

Our own Eri Riot, derby affectionado and knitting queen, has donated two dozen 50 custom made buttons to our auction. We, in our sneakiness, have divided this great offering into two separate one dozen 25 button packages.

This is a great prize package for a small business who’d like to expand their advertizing reach or for anyone planning a great event (girls night out, stag and doe, birthdays, etc.).

In addition to the custom buttons Eri is donating a set of her new adorable set of Firefly character
image buttons. This set also contains the film and TV logos, the ship, and one that just says BROWNCOAT.

Eri is the official button maker and knitting teacher for the Alberta Browncoats Society.

20 Years of Dark Horse

Dark Horse 20 YearsDark Horse Comics published a special edition comic to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Published on July 05, 2006 this comic included the artistic debut of Joss Whedon.

Feast your eyes on some awesome artwork in this must have comic for all collectors.

Dark Horse describes the contents of the pinup comic in the following manner:

Every page holds a different piece, each showcasing a character from the company’s history of great original and licensed properties. Instead of drawing their own creations, these jaw-dropping talents have traded characters, each offering an unexpected take on one of the icons of Dark Horse.
