Marian Call recently played a show in Edmonton and regaled us all with her story telling and shiny folk songs. This autographed copy of her CD, Vanilla, has been inscribed with a special CSTS Edmonton 2010 message.

The Alberta Browncoats Society is thrilled to announce that Edmonton is one of the seven cities that will receive a pre-view copy of the fan made movie Browncoats: Redemption. We’ll be screening the movie following Serenity on June 27th.
Browncoats: Redemption takes place three months after the events on Miranda and we find Captain Laura Matthews and the crew of Redemption unintentionally thrown into a situation that some view as the potential catalyst for the second unified rise of the Independents against the Alliance, since Unification Day. The Alliance is looking for a scape goat for Miranda while those unhappy with the Alliance are looking for a rallying cry to take action. Through all this, a secret about Laura is exposed that shakes the very core of the crew, threatening to break it up, challenge the trust that she’s earned with the Browncoats, and undo all the efforts she has put into place to keep a sense of peace in her life since the first Unification War.
Thanks to everyone who purchased a tshirt, hoodie or Done The Impossible DVD. Our order has been placed. Pre-purchased goodies will be available on the day of the event.
We realize that other events are taking place in our fair city on the same day that we planned to host our CSTS event (damn you Lucas!). Some browncoats have expressed torn loyalties and have asked for an event schedule. As the event is still 2 months away and we’re awaiting some final words/permission, we can’t give you a play-by-play of the day’s events just yet. However, we can provide a tentative schedule.
- 12:00 pm – doors open – tickets, tshirt pickup, socializing
- 1:00 pm – CSTS introductions, global welcome messages

Alaskan singer-songwriter Marian Call has just announced her “49 to 50″ Tour, or “49>50,” in which she will play shows and house concerts in all fifty United States — beginning with Alaska, the 49th state, and ending with Hawai’i, the 50th. Her music has been described by fans as “funky acoustic joy jazz” — she plays eclectic, humorous and heartfelt songs that appeal to crowds of all ages and demographics. Her signature Underwood typewriter, rain stick, and kazoo can be heard in most of her local (and national) performances.
On May 20, 2010 in St. Albert, Alberta, Marian Call will play a backyard house concert beginning at 7pm for a suggested donation of $5-$10 per person. All ages are welcome to attend. Please bring a lawn chair and dress appropriately for the weather. Please email joey@cstsedmonton.org for the street address.
Marian Call is an independent singer-songwriter, and her tour venues will be decided by crowdsourced fan input via Facebook and Twitter. Fans can propose concerts in their area, and the best proposals in each state will become real shows. No booking agent, manager, or label will be involved. Call has designed a simple integrated online system for fans to submit show recommendations and house concert applications. Her “street team” volunteer promoters will also use online forums to get their own posters, web graphics, and online invitations to promote the shows. The tour is designed to be more environmentally friendly, economically friendly, fan-friendly, and sustainable than traditional band tours.
This grassroots-style tour booking is becoming more critical for musicians worldwide as the entire music industry changes. This paradigm shift will be particularly important for Alaskan musicians to navigate, as the cost of touring (and the cost of buying and selling merchandise) is considerably higher for an Alaskan artist than for one based in the contiguous United States. Hence a creative and friendly approach relying on the kindness of strangers and the devotion of local fans in each city.
Marian Call has released two studio albums and more than a dozen singles. Her third fan-funded album, Something Fierce, is scheduled for release this year. For more information or press materials, including music and photographs, visit http://mariancall.com or contact mariancall@mac.com.
Interviews always welcome.

Welcome to the home of the Edmonton 2010 Can’t Stop the Serenity (CSTS) event. CSTS is being planned an organized by the Alberta Browncoats Society, a registered non-profit organization in the province of Alberta, Canada.
What is Can’t Stop the Serenity?
Can’t Stop The Serenity is a global series of screenings of the film Serenity, held to raise money and awareness for Equality Now, an international women’s rights advocacy group. Can’t Stop The Serenity events are held on (or around) June 23, which is writer / director Joss Whedon’s birthday, through the Serenity Release Anniversary, September 30.
Why Edmonton?
A better question is “why not Edmonton?” As the home of Captain Tightpants himself, or fearless leader Captain Mal Reynolds for those of you who may still need to catch up on viewing your Firefly and Serenity DVDs, Edmonton should be celebrating Can’t Stop the Serenity annually. In fact, thanks to some amazingly dedicated Browncoats, Edmonton once was a host city for the event. However, that hasn’t been the case in recent years. In 2010 we plan on bringing back the event with a bang – thanks largely in part to a dedicated crew of volunteers.
The Alberta Browncoats are on the lookout for Jayne’s Cunning Hat. Local Edmonton knitters who are interested in donating (completed) Jayne hats to our CSTS event are asked to use the Contact form on our site to indicate how many hats they’d be willing to donate. Redshirt Knitting has an awesome Jayne Hat pattern available for download if you don’t already have a copy of your own. Extra ambitious knitters can consider kitting a stuffed Serenity or two.
Browncoats are some of the most interesting and talented people in the ‘verse. Don’t believe me? Feast your eyes on this shiny donation from Amber T of the BC Browncoats.
Amber has designed multiple different cross stich patterns celebrating our favourite renegade Firefly crew and Edmonton is fortunate enough to have been presented with one to include in our silent auction.
Want to know how she did it? Check out Ambers patters here.
This week’s sneak peek item is a real treat. We have an authentic Original Serenity Movie Poster from the Theatrical Release in 2005. It is not a reprint or reproduction and will be a great addition for any Serenity/Firefly Collection. Already got one? Then this poster will make a great gift for that special Browncoat in your life.
The poster is a RARE Double Sided Print (the back is printed with the reverse, slightly lighter, image of the front). The poster is UNUSED and in Near Mint/Excellent Condition (Grade C9-C8), measures 27″ x 40″, rolled NOT folded.
In Nov. 2009, the donors had the poster autographed by Yan “Mingo” Feldman, Rafael “Fanty” Feldman (who appear in the movie) and Mark “Badger” Sheppard (who appeared in the Firefly TV series). Messages in support of CSTS messages were included with the signatures.
In May 2009, we acquired a second double-sided Serenity poster. This poster is autographed by Nathan “Mal Reynolds” Fillion, Ron “Book” Glass, Alan “Wash” Tudyk, and Jewel “Kaylee” Staite.
Note: Posters are not exactly as depicted in photo. The photo does not reflect actor’s signatures.
Own a piece of Whedon history. Come CSTS auction day, please bid high and bid often.
Technical details for the poster and photo shamelessly liberated (in true Browncoat style) from Wash-o-saurus.
