PJ Haarsma: Autographed Books

It’s been a few weeks but that doesn’t mean we’ve been resting on our laurels. A few of us trekked to the Creation Entertainment Salute to Firefly/Serenity in November and brought back some shiny items for auction and door prizes.

This week we’re announcing an item that’s near and dear to one of our organizer’s heart. We have autographed copies of books 1, 2, 3 and 4 in PJ Haarsma’s The Softwire series. The Softwire is a sci-fi series written for young adults (10 and up) but is also a great read for the young-at-heart. The books also have a companion role-playing game titled the Rings of Orbis.

PJ is one of the founders, along with our beloved Cap’t Tightpants (Nathan Fillion), of Kids Need to Read.

Kids Need to Read is a national nonprofit charity focusing on promoting childhood literacy and addressing the deplorable state of library funding that currently exists in the United States. Donating exciting, new books to schools, public libraries, health clinics and shelters in need, the foundation works to develop a lifelong love of reading in all children.

Nathan and PJ at SDCC 2009

Sunday, July 26, 2009 – Nathan Fillion and PJ Haarsma appeared at the Browncoat fan meeting at San Diego Comic Con 2009. This clip shows Nathan introducing PJ to talk about KNTR to the audience.

Note: The proceeds from monies raised through the auction of PJ’s books, the KNTR Terrify’n Space Monkey, and the SDCC 2008 Serenity Better Days Variant Comic will be donated to Kids Need to Read. Look for these items on a separate table than the CSTS/WEAC silent auction items.

Shadow: Limited Edition Blue Sun Travel Poster

This week’s sneak peek item is a limited edition, autographed, extra shiny, San Diego Comic-Con 2009 exclusive.  For SDCC 2009, Firefly Ship Works Ltd. produced a limited print run of their Blue Sun Travel Poster Shadow. The poster features the artwork of fan-favorite artist Adam Levermore and was limited to a print run of 100 posters.

Note: Poster is not exactly as depicted. Picture featured is of the standard release print run. Picture will be updated to reflect correct version at a later date. Actual poster contains no cow since we all know (thanks to Castle, Season 2, Ep. 6) that there are no cows in space!

We will have a portable debit machine with us so feel free to bid high and bid often in order to take this amazing limited edition print home with you at the end of the day.

Got your PhD in Horribleness?

Seems we’ve gotten on to a schedule of posting a new goodie update approximately every two weeks. You should visit us more often.

Not everything we’ve collected for CSTS Edmonton 2010 will be auctioned off. Some items will be used in prize draws and some are still up-in-the-air. Course, that doesn’t stop us from wanting to brag like crazy about the goodies we’ve managed to get our hands on. Our donors are the best!

This week’s sneak peek item is courtesy of the uber-generous and shiny California Browncoats. They hosted a screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog at San Diego Comic-Con 2009 and handed these awesome goggles out to all attendees. Extras were available at the California Browncoats booth. Here’s how they described them:

The California Browncoats are proud to announce another Comic-Con 2009 Exclusive Item. To assist you in your evil plans, we have Dr. Horrible Goggle Masks. These glossy cardstock masks feature the artwork of fan-favorite artist Adam Levermore and are officially approved by Team Horrible (Mutant Enemy). No self-respecting Evil League of Evil applicant will want to leave Comic-Con without one.

These goggles are extra special. They somehow managed to breed during shipping and now we’ve got multiple goggles to give away. On top of that, they’ve been autographed by some pretty spiffy people. Curious to know who? Better attend our CSTS event in June to find out!

If you have an item you’d like to donate to the auction or prize drawings we’d love to have it. Send us an email and someone from our planning committee will get back to you as soon as they’ve made it into the Evil League of Evil. Umm, on second thought. Someone will get back to you right away. The ELE application processing office can be evil in the length of their delays.

Signed Hijinks Ensue Comics

This week we can confirm that we have a few (2 for sure, possibly 3) signed Hijinks Ensue comic strips headed for the auction block.

Curious to know which comic strips we’ll have up for auction? You could spend hours trolling through all of Joel’s back issues and making wild guesses, or you can come to the big event to satisfy your curiousity!

Since CSTS is still many months away, we recommend you take a few minutes between now and July 2010 to hop on over to Hijinks Ensue and get aquainted with this awesome online geek comic strip (if you aren’t a huge fan already). That way, you’ll know exactly what you’re bidding on in the auction.

If you have an item you’d like to donate to the auction or prize drawings we’d love to have it. Send us an email and someone from our planning committee will get back to you soon.

shiny goodness

CSTS Edmonton 2010 is still 10 months away but we think now is a very good time for you to start putting your pennies, nickles and dimes into your piggy bank. You’ll want to have lots of cashy money available next summer to get your hands on our shiny goodies.

Thanks to some generous Browncoats we’ve begun collecting items that will be going up for auction at the CSTS Edmonton event.  Observant individuals will notice that some of our items are used as fundraising items for other charities. It’s one big circle of giving. Our donors purchased these items from one charity in order to donate them to the cause. You can’t stop the signal or Browncoats who believe in a cause!

We don’t want to give away all the surprises in one sitting so new auction items will be announced as we move closer to the big day. In the meantime, we can confirm that we have a Terrify’n Space Monkey and two SDCC Limited Edition Serenity: Better Days #1 comic books headed for the auction block.

If you have an item you’d like to donate to the auction or prize drawings we’d love to have it. Send us an email and someone will get back to you soon.

UPDATE: Name That Tune Fundraiser

Ni Hao Browncoats.

We have some fantastic news to share as we approach the date of our Name That Tune FUNdraiser (Sunday, May 2nd – Original Joe’s Varsity – 8404 109 St, Edmonton. 7pm – 10:30pm).

We have secured some excellent prizes to be given away and are pleased to announce that the team to raise the most cashy money for the Browncoats will be awarded with FREE tickets to the Rainmaker Rodeo concert series to either night of the team’s choice. This year the headliners include Dwight Yoakam and Adam Gregory (May 28th) and Buckcherry with Social Code (May 29th). Tickets are valued at $49.95 each (plus service charge) and we’re thrilled to be able to award this fantastic prize to our dedicated supporters. In addition to the team prize, the individual who raises the most money will be awarded with a $50 gift card to Gateway Lanes Recreation Centre. There are many more great prizes to be won for participants in the Name That Tune showdown as well as some door prizes.

We appreciate every dollar that you raise to help our cause and want to make sure your dedication and support is rewarded!

For those of you who are a bit shy on the fundraising end of things, here are a couple of tips to keep you in the running for the big prizes:

  1. Start by asking family and friends for a small donation. Even $2-5 adds up quickly and makes a difference in the long run!
  2. Too shy to approach people in person? Leave your sponsor sheet on the lunchroom table with a post-it asking for support and a date/time when you’ll come around to collect the money. Or pass it around with an envelope with a list of employee names. As each person receives it, they can cross their name off and pass it along to the next.
  3. It helps if you know a bit about the cause, so read up on the Alberta Browncoats and the CSTS Edmonton event in case people ask you questions.
  4. Ask your best friend/sister/spouse/roommate to help you solicit donations-even if they are unable to attend the event with you! They can take a copy of the sponsor sheet to work and pass it around as well.

Need a handy dandy Registration Form (pdf)?

Again, on behalf of the Alberta Browncoats Society, we thank you for your support and can’t wait to see you all out there at the Name That Tune event and the CSTS Edmonton in June.

Stay shiny!

Sending A Wave Podcast #58

We’re so excited to announce our first piece of CSTS related advertizing.

Three of the members of the CSTS Edmonton organizing committee (Alberta Browncoats Bev, Drew & Sheelagh) were interviewed by Wendy from Sending a Wave (#58, at approx 37:45) at Creation Entertainment’s Salute to Firefly & Serenity in November 2009. In it, we drop two very important pieces of information; the date and that the venue and licensing have been booked.

Thank you so much to Wendy and Odile from Sending a Wave. It was wonderful speaking to you Wendy and we hope to have a chance to meet up again soon.

Welcome Happy Harbor Comics

Happy Harbor ComicsWe are absolutely thrilled to announce our first official sponsor: Happy Harbor Comics.

Everyone in Edmonton knows that Happy Harbor is a supporter of the previous two CSTS events and just about every other shiny comics, sci-fi, and geek-tastic event held in Edmonton. It means the ‘verse to us that they’ve once again stepped up to the plate and been willing to associate their good name with our great cause.

What this means for you is that, when the time comes to purchase your tickets, you will have the option of buying them online (here) or purchasing them in person from one of Happy Harbor’s three locations across the city.

Vol.1: 12226 – Jasper Ave, Edmonton
Vol.2: 180 Manning Crossing, Edmonton
Vol.3: 10326 – 81 Ave, Edmonton

Welcome Up Yer Kilt Scottish Gifts

Quick on the heels of our first official sponsor, Happy Harbor Comics, we’ve gained a second. Please join us in thanking Up Yer Kilt Scottish Gifts for hopping on board the ride.

The proprietors of Up Yer Kilt Scottish Gifts are well known in the Alberta Scottish community as friendly and generous individuals who are always willing to lend a helping hand. It doesn’t hurt that they also sell chanters, pointy sticks (knives & swords), and various other bits of Scottish regalia both online and at Highland Games across the province.

Up Yer Kilt Scottish Gifts sponsorship helps open new doors for our auction and solidifies the notion that Browncoats can be found just about anywhere in the ‘verse. We’re so happy to have them as a sponsor.

Welcome Tower of Song

The Alberta Browncoats are very excited to announce our newest sponsor and silent auction donor: Tower of Song DJ and Videography Service.

The company owners Kevin and Dave have Hearts of Gold and have generously offered their DJ services for the auction block. So, if you’re planning a big Shindig, be it a wedding, Christmas party or company affair, don’t look any further. These are your guys.

Want to talk to them about their services before the Big Damn event? Call Kevin (780.904.6234) or Dave (780.902.9958) for more information.

Upcoming Shindigs

After an amazing Can’t Stop the Serenity event on June 27th, I hope everyone will understand that we’re taking a month off. We’re working on determining the donation totals and paying all the bills (always very important). Thank you so much to everyone for all their support.

Keep an eye on this site later in the summer . I’m sure we’ll have something planned.
